Could we connect to starlink from our sailboat in the middle of the Pacific while we circumnavigate? Five kids need int connection for school.

Yeah, that will be relatively easy, as so few users out in the ocean

And in 2018, when you had no more money to buy $TSLA stock, you agreed to keep working for Tesla for no pay at all, apart from the right to buy more $TSLA later (at the then-current market price) *if* you could grow the company’s revenue, profit, and market cap enormously.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Nov 3, 2020
Yes, although I didn’t expect the stock to rise so much so soon. The reason for the stock options is that they’re needed to help pay for humanity to get to Mars in 10 to 20 years.

The loan and financing round you reference are the same (it was a convertible note to the next round). Elon led the financing in late 2008, in the company's darkest hour. Elon's commitment to do it all himself if need be flipped investor sentiment from fear, and it saved Tesla.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Nov 3, 2020
Super appreciate your support, Steve! That convertible loan gave us 6 months of runway. Fortunately, Daimler invested $50M in May 2009, 5 months later.

Closest we got was about a month. The Model 3 ramp was extreme stress & pain for a long time — from mid 2017 to mid 2019. Production & logistics hell.

I put in my last money, even though I thought we would still fail. But, it was either that or certain death for Tesla. Extremely difficult to raise money for an electric car startup (considered super quirky back then), while stalwarts like GM & Chrysler were going bankrupt.

On this day in 2008: Tesla secures $40 million loan to avoid bankruptcy
Today, it’s the most valuable automaker in the world.

Elon Musk

That funding round completed 6pm on Christmas Eve in 2008. Last hour of last day possible, as investors were leaving town that night & we were 3 days away from bankruptcy. I put in all money I had, didn’t own a house & had to borrow money from friends to pay rent. Difficult time.

Also $499 for the phased array terminal is really cheap, the components/electronics to build and run it are expensive. The Starlink engineers have a done a great job in keeping the price low and affordable

Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Nov 3, 2020
Lowering Starlink terminal cost, which may sound rather pedestrian, is actually our most difficult technical challenge

Right now, it takes about 5 mins to set up, but, with future improvements, probably less than 3 mins. No technical knowledge needed. Just point at open sky & plug in!

Please implement all FSD functions for Norway. Norwegian laws are world-leading in acceptance for autonomous vehicles! Norway has the highest density of Tesla cars in the world. Norway is not in the EU.

You know that most of us who have Cybertrucks on order in Europe don't want a mini-me "Wolverine" Cybertruck, and would gladly get extra certifications on our licenses to drive a full-sized one. Please don't assume otherwise. :)
Getting extra certs is not a big deal.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Nov 2, 2020
Didn’t realize that was possible. No problem if there’s a way get current design Cybertruck approved in Europe!

As soon as we get country approval. This is required for each country individually, as no EU-wide approval system exists. Probably start receiving final (there are many steps) approvals around Feb/March.

Science at such large scale will need many years of R&D to prepare. The world will want to explore inner space and outer space. Let's get started.

I could not be more excited about the new supercollider! That said, while it is considerably larger, I don’t think it necessarily requires all that much incremental engineering.
