Perhaps lost in the transport debate is that @boringcompany built a 6000 ft tunnel in LA for ~$10M with V1 (Godot). Next tunnel will be made with V2 (Line-Storm). V3 (Prufrock), aspirationally 10X better, should be operational next year. For reference:

Why are the guild wheels needed, is Autopilot not sensitive enough with sonar returns and vision? And why not bank the turns on the walls, without the guide way? Taking the turns flat would be uncomfortable for passengers in lateral G’s no?

Autopilot doesn’t need the guide wheels. They’re only there if there is a complete system failure. Turns will definitely be banked in future.

How do you see the guide-wheels happening? Will @Tesla start building guide-wheels into upcoming models? Will it be an add-on? That was the thing that I found really perplexing. I have to admit, I now miss the car skate thing.

The guides are basically just a wheel, a shock absorber & a solenoid. Costs a few hundred dollars in volume.

I agree. Also the guidance wheels seem like a step backwards. They make it super specific. Other manufacturers don’t even want to take Tesla up on their supercharger offer. No changes to vehicle should be the goal.

Passive lateral safety is required by regulators & I think they’re right. Might be able to build this into the tunnel wall though. So long as the vehicle is prevented by physics from rolling or jackknifing, there is probably a good safety argument.

Yeah I feel like some kind of simulation with visual representation of a high throughput with the “main tunnel” and the multiple exits would go a long way to help people understand the value of the system. I feel like that’s what was missing yesterday.

hi elon, i was at the briefing yesterday! i still don't understand how even a tunnel w many, many exits would prevent back ups. especially in high density areas like 3rd street promenade, where a lot of people need to exit at once. can you explain more? ty!

If all vehicles were densely seated buses, throughput in excess of 100,000 people per hour per lane is possible, but better to offer a range of vehicles & let people decide what makes them happy
