If stops are split off from the main tunnel, and everything is electronically controlled, you can probably put ~1 car/second going through the tunnel. That's ~14k seats an hour, comparable to many NYC subway lines. Custom cars/vehicles w/ 8-12 seats each could beat any subway.

This *is* affordable mass transit, but better in that it takes you where and when you to go

The demo ride takes you in *same* car on road, down elevator, zips through tunnel using guide wheels, up elevator at destination & then drives on normal roads back to start

whoa it's like a subway except with way less capacity
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Dec 19, 2018
Actually way more capacity, way faster & way more convenient. Subways are fine, but it’s time to upgrade to something better.

It's true, a lot of new tech is expensive and disruption can happen on the high end. (auto industry is a good example) But wouldn't you agree that disruption also happens when a company finds a way to lower the cost? Isn't that what the @boringcompany is trying to do?

I may point out it's the same in the auto industry. Systems like disk brakes, ABS, fuel injection, automatic transmissions, air conditioning, turbocharging - all standard today - first appeared in high end cars first.
Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Dec 18, 2018
Exactly. It’s a good way to go. Get people with more money to pay for the development!

Clayton is wrong. New tech is always expensive. Tech disruption occurs at *high end*, eg computers & cell phones. It takes many design iterations & vast economies of scale to achieve mass market affordability.

So Elon Musk's new "joke" startup, the Boring Co., needed a lot of help from @SpaceX. But almost all of any future benefits will flow to @elonmusk himself. This vexed even some of his biggest fans. wsj.com/articles/elon-…

Elon Musk
@elonmusk · Dec 18, 2018
Totally false. Buried in this incredibly misleading WSJ article is the actual statement from Thiel’s Founder’s Fund: “we have no concerns whatsoever.”
