Not like it is now. 25 percent of the country still didn’t even have the internet in 2008. Pornhub had only just been invented. YouTube was a couple years old. Same for Twitter. It was the very early days of the internet.

1. When someone lies about you everyone assumes it’s true, and the only way to redeem yourself is in court
2. Going to court takes many years and millions of dollars
3. By the time the court case concludes you’re the only one who really remembers it

In late 2009, NPR ran a very effective effort to vilify the word “retarded” and outright ban its use from the lexicon.
It was slowly building steam through the Associated Press the year before and following NPR’s efforts, the word was effectively purged from the mainstream
