I think most Americans are fine with some high skilled immigration, if it is truly top notch people in the top 1% of their skill set.
What we don’t want is replacement type immigration just so companies can get workers at 1/2 off discount wages.

What matters is addressing the limiting of understanding. If you have enough data, create compression/prediction formulas aka physics.
If you don’t have enough data, build machines/devices to get more data aka engineering.
Latter is the limiting factor today.

I studied physics out of curiosity about the nature of the universe, but with many engineering classes mixed in.
